Radarsystemet - Simrad Radar ARPA RA42C

Onboard Tuna Clipper, Arne can select to view a wide screen presentation of a dual range mode, which will enable him to see his immediate area while simultaneously keeping a watchful eye on what is approaching Tuna Clipper in the distance. This is a major contribution towards the safety of vessels at sea, especially for vessels that do not have two radars fitted.

Tuna Clippers radar system includes an Automatic Tracking Aid (ATA) which tracks up to 10 targets. Once locked-on, the radar will automatically provide a menu of data which includes speed, bearing, course and closest point of approach on all targets selected. A built-in alarm system warns Arne of possible collision or lost target, making watch-keeping easier and safer.

The Simrad RA42 radar onboard Tuna Clipper operates with a 4 foot open scanner with 4kW output, which extends the range to 48NM, the sharper beam width provided by an open scanner, gives detailed extended range performance on the 10.4" TFT color display screen found in Tuna Clippers well equipped wheelhouse . Viewing two ranges on one split screen allows, for example, both 0.5NM and 6NM to be selected, which provides Arne with a view of his immediate proximity in detail, together with approaching hazards in the distance. Both ranges are continuously variable which means that he can adjust his radar to precisely the ranges he needs without being restricted by pre-set range buttons.

The radar has a semi 3D facility. This enables easy and instant discrimination between weak and strong echo strengths for recognition of shoreline, targets and obstacles. This facility is particularly valuable in heavy rain or rough seas where targets can be seen clearly and naturally for recognition at a glance.

The electronic compass and speed log is connected to the radar via the NMEA input, the True Motion function becomes available. The radar is fully specified with all the commercial radar modes such as VRM (Variable Range Marker), EBL (Electronic Bearing Line) and Track etc.

During the hours of darkness Arne can adjust the radar to reverse the contrast of the display. This is an important safety feature that reduces light emission from the screen, while accentuating targets and providing continuity of night vision.

Distance Range 0,125 - 48 NM, 10 Ranges
Distance accuracy Better than 0.9% of max range of the scale in use, or 8 m, whichever is the greater
Minimum detecting distance Within 25 m
Bearing accuracy 1° or less

Ekolodet - Simrad EQ40

With Tuna Clippers echo sounder, the Simrad EQ40, it is possible to find and evaluate fish stocks, identify size and type of fish at great depths.

To the left of the Radar display in Tuna Clippers wheelhouse is the echo sounders flat LCD 14" display screen. Here, data received from the highly sensitive Simrad transducers, is interpreted. A high degree of detail is displayed to show the typography of the seabed and fish behaviour, which can help to establish fish species and size.

With the EQ40 it is even possible to identify what is below more clearly than ever before. The transducer is mounted on the hull, away from any water disturbances. Water speed and temperature is delivered to the Echo sounder display.

The EQ40 show a detailed graphic depiction of the seabed on the high-resolution screen, detecting single fish clearly and accurately. The powerful 1000-watt transmitters can be selected to operate at 38/50kHz, 38/200kHz or 50/200kHz while a split screen facility allows both results to be displayed at once to provide a clear view of what is below at both selected frequencies. The powerful transceivers can "see" down to 1,200 meters (3,600 ft).

The EQ40 on Tuna Clipper is linked via the NMEA interface to other external sensors making it possible to display navigation information. This makes it possible to switch from Fish Finding to a navigation display or select a split screen facility which can provide navigation data simultaneously with the Echo sounder display.

Alarms can be set to alert when fish enter a preselected zone at a given echo strength, which avoids the possibility of missed opportunities and the need to constantly watch the screen. Other alarms can also be set to warn of deep water and shallows when under way.

Autopilot - Simrad AP20

In Tuna Clippers wheelhouse the AP50 autopilot display presents information when in the automatic steering mode. Heading, position and track data are all displayed with the help of input from the GPS/Plotter system.

A large display shows the actual rudder angle at any time. Simultaneously the heading is displayed in a separate window.
The RFC35R Fluxgate Compass is also connected to the AP20.

VHF och GMDSS - Simrad RD68H

The RD 69H is a powerful VHF with DSC controller built in connected to the boats GPS system.

The Digital Selective Calling system (DSC), part of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) was devised for the world's Merchant Shipping fleets as standard for how safety at sea is to be co-ordinated. The DSC system is intended to make distress calling faster and more accurate and allow the user to call up individual ships and coast stations.

In a distress situation a message will automatically include Tuna Clippers position making it easier to be found by rescuers.

VHF stations, which are capable of receiving a DSC distress call, now cover the most of Europe.

Pressing the distress button will alert ships and coast stations of Tuna Clippers position, information about the vessel and Arnes selected channel for return communication.
